PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This lecture, recorded during a 2022 Live Review Course & Clinical Update, provides important education about prescribing medications for older adults.


FORMAT

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  1. Identify important considerations to be made when prescribing for the older adult, such as the new onset of disease, unrecognized adverse drug events, and adverse effects of medications.
  2. Describe appropriate and inappropriate uses of medications for the older adult, using the American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria to ensure safety when prescribing.
  3. Discuss the mechanism of action, monitoring, and side effects of commonly prescribed medications, as well as additional nonpharmacologic considerations necessary in the care of older adults.
